The New Fall Fashion Trend--Jeggings

This fall, the most popular product purchased at the back to school sales were something called Jeggings. Jeggings are leggings that look like jeans. It is popular to wear a pair of jeggings with an over-sized sweater or a loose fitting shirt. This new style has made stores like Gap popular again, whose share price could use some help after dropping 16% year to date. Gap has been pushing tight jeans and jeggings at reasonable prices. This is making consumers flock to Gap, and it has been reported that they are now lines at the check-out counter.

I really like jeggings because they are a comfortable option as they are the leggings material. I read this article last night, and I did not think much of it until I walked into math class today. As I was sitting in my chair waiting for the rest of the class to arrive, a girl walks in wearing jeggings. Jeggings on this girl made her legs look extremely fat, and did not flatter her figure. Then, as I was walking back to my dorm room after class today, I saw a group tour of American University. A girl on the tour was also wearing jeggings and a tight fitted shirt. While this girl was quite skinny, I thought it was extremely inappropriate to wear that while visiting a college since she was trying to make a good impression.

So I am making the rules on this new fashion hot item. Jeggings should be worn for casual events like hanging out with friends or going to a class. Also, jeggings should only be worn if they flatter your figure. Think of it this way: if you would not wear leggings with your outfit, then you probably should not wear jeggings. Finally, jeggings should only be worn with loose fitting clothing on top. If girls follow this advice then they will make sure they look our best while wearing this new fashion trend.

  1. My twin, Sarah, is a fashion-merchandising student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. While she loves leggings and "jeggings", she constantly points out that they've been popular in European countries like England and France since 2006. However, she also mentions that they were usually more high fashion and therefore more costly. With the growing popularity in the United States, I’m not surprised that they would now be cheaper. More companies will produce them causing competition and a greater number of leggings supplied which in effect would cause the prices to decrease. Either way, like all trends, especially trends in fashion, this soon will die out and the days of girls wearing jeggings as appropriate attire for everything will disappear too.

  2. Despite the fact that Jeggings are not necessarily the most flattering, I think that they will see a great amount of success here in the US in the next few years. Many are flocking towards Jeggings because they provide an accessible skinny jean look, without the discomfort of an actual pair of skinny jeans. A wider variety of people are therefore able to wear them. Any retail clothing store should work on providing their own line of Jeggings, because just like any other trend, they are a hot item and many people want them. Stores should ride this wave while they can, because, as Mia said, this trend is still likely to fade away at some point.

  3. While I agree with you that Jeggings are not exactly the most flattering... the question we should ask ourselves is not wether or not the jeggings are fashionable.. The bigger question is WHY do you guys think they became such a sale booster for these retail stores? Is it the cheaper price? is it simply the trend? What could we conclude about the current consumer preference?

  4. I think they became so popular because they are not only comfortable but can be stylish when worn correctly. Jeans can be restricting with the tight material while Jeggings give off the same look without the uncomfortableness. Jeggings are also leggings which is why they can be found for cheaper than many pairs of jeans. A store like Forever 21 is now selling Jeggings for the price of $6.50 while a pair of jeans is closer to $25. We can see that the consumer preference is cheap and comfortable.
